Life Lessons with Metallica

Written by evan on at 11:58 AM

we had people over last night for small group, phase 10, guitar hero, fish fry planning. after everyone was gone, i needed time to unwind. some how found myself watching the documentary metallica: some kind of monster on vh1. funny to watch the "drama" of a mega metal band.

james hetfield goes into rehab and comes out some months later, and he is takes about how he used alcohol and drugs to have a good time, but in reality, every day we did the same thing. partied, and then went to bed, and woke up with the same problems, and it got really boring day after day.

and now that he is off of it, each day is different. and that he didn't need to look to that stuff anymore.

Covered in the Dust

Written by evan on August 29, 2006 at 10:12 PM

A couple of weeks ago we talked about jesus calling the disciples, and did the rob bell thing and talked about what it means to be called. and what it means to be covered in the dust of your rabbi. so, if we're suppose to be covered in the dust of your rabbi what does that look like? and what would the rabbi be doing in our community.

our students came up with a list of following ways that we can live love in our community.
pick up trash
babysit
help carry groceries
gift baskets
pumping gas/paying for gas
nursing home
wash cars
housing cookout
donate clothes
habitat 4 humanity
rake leaves
help international students
food drive
school supply drive
donate blood
volunteer @ soup kitchen
salvation army, ring bells
give rides home

the last sunday of every month at h2o, there is no worship team, no message, no altars, we are just going to live love in the community

Conversational Van Rides

Written by evan on at 12:11 AM

Have been thinking about a lot of things recently. Just finished reading donald millers "searching for god knows what." i might write about my thoughts on what he calls "the lifeboat theory".

also need to update about our first live love night at h2o. amazing. maybe i will do that tomorrow.

today though, i went with pastor to see leonard sweet speak at riverside in peoria. thoughts i took from leonard.

christianity today is more muslim then it is christianity.
first non-temple based religion: christianity.
shouldn’t be leadership, should be followership.
why are we not communicating like Jesus did.
killer metaphors that will kill a church – refuge, shelter, a safe haven.
we trust strangers more then we trust the holy spirit.
the primary language of this culture is not about words, but images.
sometimes god is more active in the world then the church.
modern christianity is more modern then christianity.

stuff that pastor and i talked about on the road
meeting the needs of the homosexual community
future of church leadership (followership)
how long does it take to defrag the church
cards walk off grandslam
fishing in a river
importance of knowing your future-in-laws

Mikvah

Written by evan on June 5, 2006 at 12:11 AM

Went to glenwood park tonight and talked about the ancient hebrew cleansing ritual, mikvah.

The ancient hebrews would walk into the mikvah, and when their feet would touch the water, they would ask god to bless their journey ahead. we challenged the students to do the same.

then they continued into the water, and when their hands would touch the water, they would ask god to bless their hands, and for them to be used for good and not evil. we challenged the students to do the same.

then they continued into the water, and when the water would immerse their hearts, they would ask god make their ways, his ways. then they continued into the water, until their head was immersed, as a symbol of god cleansing their minds.

played volleyball afterwards, it was refreshing.

got the idea of this faith lesson from romans 6:1-14, mars hill, and follow the rabbi
